10 Reasons Why You Need to Watch Jane the Virgin

A few months after starting it, I finally finished watching Jane the Virgin with my mum a couple of weeks ago. My mum was really hesitant about watching it at first, but ended up loving it at least as much (if not more!) than me! We raced through the first two seasons really quickly but then had a huge delay before the third season was available on Netflix UK. And now it's all finished (well, until season 4 is aired in October, but it'll probably take a year for that to be available in the UK) and I already am missing it more than I could have imagined!

The Google description of the show says:

"Jane Villanueva, the daughter of a teen mother, grew up determined not to repeat her mom's mistakes. Jane is studying to be a teacher, and she is engaged to a handsome detective who supports her decision to remain a virgin until marriage, but a routine visit to the clinic turns her life upside down. Inseminated by a specimen meant for a patient in the next room, Jane is in a situation made only more insane when she learns that the sperm donor is her boss, Rafael. As her meticulously planned life gets more like the telenovelas she loves, she faces a lot of complicated decisions about the future."

It sounds pretty crazy but it's so entertaining - the show is currently rated 7.8/10 on IMDb and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! For more info, check out the trailer for season 1.

Anyway, both my mum and I have absolutely loved watching the show for so many different reasons. I thought I'd share some of these with you in an attempt to persuade you to watch it too (I promise you it's worth it!)!

Covers every genre

Well, maybe not every genre but close enough! There’s pretty much a bit of everything mixed up in it - romance, horror, drama, crime, comedy…

I don’t think there’s been one episode where I haven’t laughed! There’s always a touch of humour (even when the rest of the show maybe isn’t so happy) so it always brings a smile to my face regardless of my current mood!

Overly dramatic

I have never seen so many crazily extravagant ideas crammed into one show - there’s more drama than you could ever imagine possible for a show titled Jane the Virgin!

Family values

The three generations of Villaneuva are really close and it’s so brilliant at portraying the highs and lows of everyday family relationships. Family is a core theme (particularly to Jane) and it’s really lovely to see this shine through all of the ups and downs of the show.

Love stories

I’m a huge fan of romance and this TV show certainly doesn’t lack it - the character relationships get so complicated so quickly, but it makes watching the show even more addictive!

Well, as brilliant as all of the different love stories may be, I must admit to having a slight (i.e. extreme!) bias when it comes to Rafael (arguably my favourite character on the show!)… I 100% ship him and Jane!!

All of the unnecessary plot twists

I’ve completely lost track of how many plot twists are in the show - they’re a bit over-the-top but completely irresistible! Most of the episodes end on some sort of cliff-hanger which makes it impossible to stop watching without finding out what happens!

The narrator

The voice of the narrator throughout all of the episodes is absolutely fantastic. He adds a great sense of humour to the show and does a great job of entertaining (particularly by adding to the drama of the show)!

Relatable (similar to real-life) struggles and situations

Although there’s an awful lot of excessive drama, there are actually loads of underlying lessons about real-life struggles and situations too. It makes the show even more meaningful - I can guarantee there will be at least a couple of theses that you relate to!

Silly special effects

The consistency throughout this show is unbelievable, but they always make an effort to add a little sub-theme to each episode, often by including additional special effects. These themes always add a sense of hilarity and do a great job of tying in with other elements of the episode too!

So yes, I'm a huge fan of Jane the Virgin! Its so bizarre to have no more episodes to watch for now - I'm just waiting for other TV shows to kick off again with Riverdale and Stranger Things next month. Hopefully I'll be able to access Jane the Virgin season 4 soon! And I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Jane the Virgin if you’re looking for a new show to watch!
